About the Studio

I offer comprehensive training in an array of techniques related to singing, performance, teaching, and the Life skills essential for attaining your aspirations. A full list of the performing arts related topics available for study can be found on the Performing Arts Training page. For those here specifically for information on Life skills, that has its own page. It is, without any doubt, the most vital skill set I teach.

Lessons are tailored to the needs of each student and are open to all ages and experience levels. Private and small-group sessions are held at my home studio in Marietta and at St. Dunstan's in Buckhead, and I travel to your school, theatre, or church for educational offerings related to choirs and theatrical productions.

TESTIMONIALS:

"Catherine has taught me not only the techniques and skills I needed in order to grow as a performer (auditioning, acting, music theory), but also the discipline and self-drive required in order to be successful in whatever I'm doing. Whether I'm on a stage or not, Catherine's advice rings true and has significantly impacted me for the better."

"One of the things I have learned from watching Catherine work with kids is that children will rise to whatever expectation you set. She definitely has high expectations, but I'm astounded by how my daughter always achieves them with Catherine's coaching and support."

"Catherine is so talented, and I knew my daughters would learn a ton about music, vocal technique, and stage presence from her. What I never expected was her impact on their desire to be independent and contributing members of the community. Catherine has taught them about being intentional about how they spend and manage their time. She doesn't just preach about commitment, but rather helps them prioritize practicing along with school, health, and their other activities. She's taught them to not be wasteful, to keep a tidy space, and to see how their simplest actions affect themselves and others."

"My kids started working with Catherine when they were in elementary school. I always knew they were learning much about singing and music, but it wasn't until they got to middle school that I realized just how far ahead of the curve they were. Their vocal technique, knowledge of music theory, and ability to read music are all well ahead of their peers. Their teachers are so impressed, and it has really been a gift for them to recognize how advanced they are."

"We have worked with Catherine multiple times and she is fantastic. She has both classical music/singing experience to share but also has real musical theatre and acting experience with real tactical advice to make immediate changes. She is a wonderful musician/singer/actor herself who has real life experience to share with you."

"Catherine has an amazing talent for immediately identifying vocal deficiencies and assisting the vocalist to correct those. I have over twenty years of vocal coaching from excellent coaches, but never before have I had someone who was able to correct my "problem area." Catherine identified the problem on my first visit and we are close to complete correction in just a few months. I highly recommend Catherine to anyone who wishes to vocalize better. She is an amazingly talented coach. Thrilled I found her."

"I took piano lessons in grade school. I was in high school when the Beatles music hit the scene so I found three friends and started a band. I played bass in several bands over the decades but never thought I could sing.

Catherine showed me that singing is like playing any other instrument, it requires proper instruction, technique, and practice. I now sing for my own enjoyment. I derive great pleasure and satisfaction from playing a few chords on the piano and singing. I learn more from Catherine with every lesson and she inspires me to understand and enjoy music even more."

"I love to sing and am a member of my church choir. However, I have never had any formal training and lacked confidence in my abilities in the vocal department. So far, I have more or less just been "making a joyful noise." I have always wanted to take voice lessons, but never had the opportunity to do so. After seeing a post on Facebook about Catherine Moulton's Studio, I decided now was my time! I have been working with Catherine for two months. She has taught me so much in that brief period of time. I have learned vocal warm up exercises to prepare my voice to sing. I have learned vocal technique and theory. Most of all, I have learned to have more confidence in my ability to sing and feel like I am actually making a contribution to my church choir (and not just filling a seat in the choir loft!) Catherine is amazing. She is encouraging and supportive. I look forward to my lesson each week. The old adage is true - you are never too old to learn!"

"My daughters have worked with Catherine for years, and while I'm so appreciative of what they've learned about music, singing, and being part of a choir, I'm most grateful for the confidence she has given them when it comes to being in front of people. Whether it's public speaking, singing, or simply being a leader, she's given them the skills to know how to dress, speak, carry themselves, and prepare. These are invaluable life skills we just don't always think about teaching as parents. And heaven knows our kids need all the help they can get when it comes to instilling confidence."

"Catherine has been such an amazing resource to both my children as they have navigated both elementary and middle school drama auditions. She has helped them pick the best songs for their range, added movement that helps them stand out from others, and works to make sure they feel confident and prepared. She has built both of my daughter's self-esteem and confidence during their sessions and we couldn't be happier. Catherine's experience and passion for teaching is a true gift! I would encourage anyone to take advantage of sessions with her!"

"Ms. Catherine helped me stage my audition song and monologue. She is super encouraging and fun to work with, and she guides me to improvement with a coaching style that is very professional, kind, and consistent. If you're looking for help on an audition, you should definitely go to her!"

A Note About Private Teachers

When it comes to music and performing arts instructors, there is no governing body. Absolutely anyone can hang a sign outside their door and take students. This, coupled with a general misconception of what training in this field truly looks like, plus a severe underrating of what students are capable of at each age, complicates the search for a truly qualified and effective instructor.

Whatever discipline a student decides to study, the only teacher worth training with must have the following: a deep understanding of the subject matter and the related skill set, the skill level to expertly (or at the very least, competently) demonstrate techniques, and the ability to clearly transmit knowledge in such a way that the student can also gain thorough understanding and eventual mastery if they put in the work to do so. It is equally crucial that their teacher push them to do every aspect of training that will help them reach their goals as well as provide consistent challenges. Otherwise, why invest considerable time, energy, and money in it?

Music and performing arts can be of high value in the development of a full human if you are training with someone worthwhile. Otherwise, you are creating bad habits that are difficult to correct, and not just in those skill sets.

Catherine Moulton is a pedagogue and choralist working in Marietta. Her teaching strives to embody music theoretic principles through vocal technique, stagecraft, confident self-presentation, and the building of other critical life skills. Currently she runs an active private lesson studio. In 2019, she co-founded Quadratum (with Brian Parks), an auditioned ensemble that strives to develop intelligent, self-reliant young people through rigorous musical training, direct-impact service work, and demanding expeditions. A graduate of CCCEPA, she holds a Bachelor's degree from Indiana University with additional studies taking place at Manhattan School of Music and Jacobs School of Music. During her time as Head of Education at The Strand, she directed a vast array of shows, camps, and educational opportunities. Twice monthly, she plays Ursula Freeholder in the surrealist lounge act "The Freeholders (No Relation)" in The Strand's Lumiere Lounge. Her pedagogical aspiration is ultimately predicated on the proven idea that children are far more capable than society allows or encourages them to be, and that limiting musical study to performance unethically diminishes both students and musics alike. Her school model needs backers; contact her if financing it or providing infrastructural resources interests you.
